THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF EV CHARGERS
Understanding EV Charging Stations
The first thing to know about EV charging stations is that there are three different levels of charging. These levels differ based on the available electrical resources at a location and the type of vehicles the station is designed to serve. Let’s explore each of these three levels.
Level 1 Chargers
Level 1 chargers, often referred to as “household” chargers, are typically installed at home and use a standard 120-volt AC outlet. The main benefits of a Level 1 charger are that it doesn’t require significant modifications to your home’s wiring, and it’s conveniently located at your residence. You can simply plug in your car after work and relax indoors. By the time you’re ready to leave for work the next morning, your vehicle will be charged and ready to go.
The downside to Level 1 charging is its slow speed. It can take between 10 to 20 hours to fully recharge an EV from a depleted battery. However, most people drive only 36 kilometers per day, meaning they’re often just topping off the battery rather than charging it from empty. In these cases, charging may only take 4 to 5 hours.
Level 2 Chargers
Level 2 chargers, often known as “business chargers,” are usually found in locations such as shopping malls, restaurants, and office buildings. They require a 240-volt AC outlet, which makes them significantly faster than Level 1 chargers. While a Level 1 charger might take 10 to 20 hours to fully charge a depleted battery, a Level 2 charger can do so in just 3 to 8 hours.
Level 2 charging is sometimes called “opportunity charging” because people often take advantage of the opportunity to charge their EVs when they find these chargers in places like malls or restaurant parking lots.
Some homeowners also choose to install Level 2 chargers because of the faster charging times, and since they also do not require major changes to home wiring.
Level 3 Chargers
Level 3 chargers, commonly known as “commercial chargers,” are the fastest and most powerful type of EV chargers available. Level 3 charging is a direct current (DC) charging method that bypasses the onboard AC charging systems in EVs, connecting directly to the vehicle’s battery. This allows for a full charge in 30 minutes or less. They are generally found in locations like airports or bus terminals, where they are used to quickly recharge electric buses and trucks.
